4chan does have many boards about various subjects, including anime, video games,
technology, sports, animals, auto and many, many more. I used to frequently browse
/g/-technology, we usually talk there about GNU/Linux, new consumer electrionics,
NSA spying, configuring desktops to look cool (anime wallpapers and stuff).
Your image of 4chan probably comes from /b/-random. There are some really crazy
people there, but it's just that one board. I'm not a sports person, but there are two
boards just about sports - /sp/, /asp/ - alternative sports and there's also /fit/ -
health and fitness.

4chan also used to be underground, but it got much attention from media about
"Anonymous activists" making it popular now. The quality of posts became lower
after that.

In alternative sports they discuss also martial arts, I trained Karate and Aikido a little
and always wanted to go to Okinawa and learn real Karate from the source. However,
I'd have to first learn the japanese language.
