とはいえ、紅茶が市民権を得るまでに100年近く掛かっている。理由として、税金（関税？）が高かったことにより値段が高く、（一般庶民には手が届かないほど）手が届かないものであったからと言える。
それ故に、1700年代においては貴族クラスの嗜好品となっていた。
