キャラウェイは学生時代の旧友であるトム・ブキャナンの邸宅で、
ジョーダン・ベイカーと初対面する。彼女はゴルフの女子プロであり、
誰もが知っている有名人だ。キャラウェイは、ジョーダン・ベイカーが
優勝を勝ち取ったトーナメントで、ゴルフボールを動かす不正行為を
したと伝える新聞記事を読んだことがあった。
キャラウェイはやがてミス・ベイカーに魅かれ付き合うようになる。
後に当時を回想して、キャラウェイはベイカー女史の世間向けに作ら
れた顔の裏側の正体に気づく。
次のセンテンスはギャッツビー中、最大の難解な意味の文章である。
