洋書・読み終えた本の感想スレ・雑談あり 1

英語の原書を読めるようになる前は英字新聞を読んでいたから、「怒りの葡萄」に描かれた
根なし草の農業労働者を搾取したシステムと似たようなものが今でも生きていることを知って
いる。違うのは、現在は搾取されているのが中南米からの不法移民だということだ。
アメリカと云う国は差別と搾取の汚い国なのだ。光と影の部分を持っている。
スタインベックは「怒りの葡萄」を書いたため共産主義者で労働争議の扇動者だと非難された。
そして「怒りの葡萄」は一時発禁本にされたこともあった。いまでも故郷ではよく思われていない。

Then I began to understand, for to many of the older inhabitants of Salinas,John Steinbeck,
was a betrayer of his birthplace, a maligner of decent people―honest farmers and shippers―
and dirty-minded as well.
Those things could not be forgotten, even after more than thirty years. Many of them fears
that some of the books he had written had planted seeds for future labor unrest in their
fertile valley.
“Mr.Too-Big-for-His-Britchs”was dead now, but the anger remained. It didn’t matter that
he had left the region as a young man, eventually to win the Nobel Prize for Literature,
or that he came from an old and respected family.(13頁)

スタインベックは身の丈６尺を超える偉丈夫だ。内に籠って文学に没頭していたわけではない。
チャラチャラしたダンス・パーティーや女子学生との気楽な会話とかは苦手だったが、女に
不自由したわけではない。いくつかの挿話が紹介されている。
