最初の方の居候イジメみたいのはそれなりに読めたんだが
魔法学校でどうこうというのは魔法が苦手なんで退屈だったわ
そもそも一般常識として読んでおくかという読書姿勢が間違い藁

以前、たまたま入院した病院の図書室に置いてあったので暇にまかせて読んだことがある。
よく比べられるThe Lord of the Ringsのように、
現実と異なる物語世界を一から緻密に創造する代わりに、
秘密の入口のようなものを通って簡単に魔法学校に行けるあたりは
さすがに現代のお手軽な児童文学のようでもあるけど、
最後まで物語の展開に関わるちょっとした謎が仕込まれていて、
私はなるほど理由もなくあれほど読まれたわけでもないなと思った。

それから当然だけと口語表現が多いので、
学校の英語だけ勉強してきたような人にはちょうといいかな。

調べなくてもなんとなくわかっているという状態でないといけないんだろうなあ

一年余りの間にいろんなことが変わってしまったが、
お家時間は有効に使えただろうか？

Hitchcock by François Truffaut (Revised Edition)

言わずと知れた、世の中にHitchcockを真に比類の無い映画作家として認知させるきっかけとなった対話の記録。
単なるインタビューではなく、
互いに一流の映画作家同士の対話である。

Hitchcockのwitに富んだ語り口は、
随所に読者が舌を巻くような透徹した洞察を示しており、
観客のsuspenseを維持するために考え抜かれた映像手法や、
有名なMacGuffinのような秀逸な物語的deviceが語られる。

しかし、本当に驚くべきことは、
Hitchcockが早い時期から映像の優位を確信し、
映画における台詞dialogueや物語のもっともらしさ（彼の言う‘plausibles’）をほとんど信じていなかったことである。
MacGuffinのような概念が重要なのではなく（彼はどの道そうしたものを発明したであろうし）、
彼が天性の映画作家であったことがすべてを可能にした。

Histoire du cinéma（Jean-Luc Godard）の中でくり返される‘Le contrôle de l'univers’（The control of the universe）という言葉がHitchcockに捧げられているように、
映画の想像力がこの世の摂理と拮抗することを改めて確認するために。

映画の一場面や分析的なカットが多数挿入されており、
読めばきっともう一度画面で確認したくなること必至なので、
まだお家時間があるうちにどうぞ。

それらしい箇所がわかった。

別れ際にKlaraがお礼を言ったのに対して、
Josieが「言うまでもないこと」という意味で‘No-brainer’と答えてるみたいだね。

Never Let Me Goの読者はすでに馴染みがあるかもしれないが、
社会的にmarginalな存在（Artificial Friend）の視点から歪な近未来社会の実態が徐々に明らかになる。

最初からKlaraは専ら観察observeする存在として描かれるが、
Hailshamの子供たちかそうであったように、
その知覚は常に部分的・断片的で全体像whole pictureは与えられない。
（この物語で絶えず物理的な視界が制限されるばかりか、
高い負荷がかかる場面でAFの知覚まで断片化するのはいかにも示唆的である。）
また、AF（subhuman）である彼女は他の人間たちhumansの間でしばしば、
自分が存在しない（見えない）ような感覚を味わう。

これらはSFというジャンルに関わると言うより、
むしろminority（ethnic, sexual, colonial, etc.）の文学に共通する特徴を独自に展開しているように見える。

結末を見ても、これを単純に教訓的な童話のように見なすことはできないだろう。
人間に'Something that's unique and won't transfer.'のような何かがあるのかという問いに対して、
KlaraはManagerにそれは人の中にあるのではなくその人を愛する人たちの中にあるという、
やや（作者による）意図的な韜晦とも取れる答えをしている。

しかし実のところ、むしろこの‘unique’なもの、完璧なコピーさえ拒絶するどこにも実体として存在しない特質こそ、
別の差別（終盤で示唆されているAFに対する差別も含めて）の原因の一つなのではないか？
そしてこれはMr Capaldiの言うreverse-engineeringのような手段では解決できない問題である。

テクノロジーの問題は逆に差別のような人間社会の非常に古い問題を深刻化し、
テクノロジー固有の問題としては解決できない。
そうした意味でもAFを通じて語られるのは我々の社会の問題なのである。

Good Morning, Midnight by Jean Rhys (Penguin Modern Classic)

現代文学の読者には専らWide Sargasso Seaの作者として知られるRhysの戦前の作品。
Dickinsonの詩から取られた表題は、
Dayに拒まれる詩人の運命に自分をなぞらえているようにも見えるが、
Day/Nightの対立を宣言する側から無効にしながら、
Rhysがこの詩人と共有する冷めた意識detached awarenessも窺わせる。

この作品は一見、Rhys自身を思わせる一人称のheroineがdepressionやalcoholismを経てほとんどsuicidalな願望（‘drinking myself to death’）を懐きながら、
苦痛に対する一種のindifferenceに達しようとする過程を物語っている。

しかしそれも叶わず、結末で今にも部屋に入って来る様子を思い描いていたのとは別の‘the white dressing-gown’の隣室の男を迎え入れる時、
この男のidentityがぼかされているのは一種のself-deceptionなのだろうか（‘l don't need to look. l know.’）、
作品を締めくくる‘Yes - yes - yes ...’は歓喜したaffirmativeではなく、
自分自身の根深い不信（‘ton sale cerveau’）によって裏切られ、
自分と同類（‘another poor devil of a human being’）を相憐れむself-mockeryでもあるだろうか。

modernismの時代に相応しく安易なredemptiveな結末を避けながらも、
Dickinsonに倣って‘So good night, Day!’と潔く言い切れないRhysの
vulnerableな心情が表れた結末かもしれない。
