ついでながら、All That Heaven Allowsは、

よりironicで政治的な角度からremakeされることになる。

　Geography Club (The Russel Middlebrook Series Book 1)
　　by Brent Hartinger

　映画化された作品ということで読んでみた。
孤独だったゲイの高校生の男が、あるきっかけから学校内のゲイの男やバイの女性たち
と出会い、この五人でサポートグループを作ることになった。
　で、いろいろな問題が発生するのだけれど、ゲイであることを一般の人に知らるのが
怖いんだね。だからこの五人は秘密結社のような繋がりになってゆく。
　主人公はゲイの正体がばれないように日常生活で嘘の自分を演じているのだけれど、
友人の頼みで、女性たちとダブルデートをすることになって、それがまた厄介なことに
なってゆく。その他にもいろいろなトラブルが発生。
　映画化されただけあって、面白い展開がいろいろあるけれど、作者のご都合主義的な
ストーリー展開も気になる。まあ、小説だからある程度は仕方ないか。
　全244ページ。

Cassavetes on Cassavetes, ed. Ray Carney

同じシリーズに収められたものから。

あまたいる映画作家の中でもCassavetesは取り分け興味をそそる一人であろうが、
以前、濱口竜介のあの素晴らしい「ハッピーアワー」を観てから、
その演出の方法を明かした『カメラの前で演じること』の中でCassavetesが大きく取り上げられるのを見て、
今さらながらCassavetesに対する見方を新たにした。
ワークショップを通じて手探りで作り上げる「ハッピーアワー」の方法が、
想像以上にCassavetesから直接学んでいたのは新鮮だった。
言わばCassavetesが経験と直感に従って行ったことを方法として実践したというか。

書かれたscriptに頼らずしかし単なるimprovisationでもなく、
撮影の中でactorsがtextを自分のものにし（‘belong to them’）自分のpersonal感情で反応するまで追い込む手法は、
時にはその前でCassavetes自身が狼狽えるstaggeredような演技を引き出す。

とにかくすごく面白い本だか、
紙の本がまともに手に入らないSirkとは逆にKindleはないのかな。
Columboの後でPeter FalkがA Woman Under the Influenceに出演してるのとか、
改めて何かすごいことだと思う。

忘れてたけど、ed.となってるのは、
これがCassavetes自身によるautobiographyではなく、
Sirk on Sirkのような一貫したinterviewでもなく、
Cassavetesが様々な場面で語ったことを繋げて編集してるから。

Cassavetesは自分の作品は所謂「アート系」art pictureではなく、
自分もhighbrowでもintellectualでもなくstreet personだと語っているけど、
こういう事情は今も変わらないんだろうな。
結局、制作会社も観客も自分のイメージを投影できるほどほどに心地良い嘘を好むので
（映画ほど幻想と一体になった娯楽もない）、
現実の姿がscreenに映し出されれば逆に「アート」になってしまう。
その結果、こういう作品が専らインテリによって消費されるというのも皮肉な話。

Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald

岡崎京子のマンガの帯に「愛と資本主義」みたいなのがあった気がするけど、
Fitzgeraldのsubtitleをもじって‘A (Capitalist) Romance’と呼ぶべきかもしれない。
DickはNicoleを治療するpsychiatristでもあるのだが、
psychoanalysisのお馴染みのincest tabooやfamily ideologyは、
ここではbourgeois社会の矮小な神話以上の意味を担っていない。
Fitzgeraldはpsychoanalysisが固執する個人の歴史・物語historyをあっさり無視して、
Great Depressionに先立つ経済や社会が変容するbourgeois社会に及ぼす影響を巧みにすくい上げている。

かなり技巧的で読み難い箇所も多いが、
直接描写する以上に描写を通じて多様な意味作用を喚起するような文体で、
どこか結末の曖昧さとも通じるところがある。
Nicoleというcaseを治療していたつもりのDickは、
最終的に自分の方がより広大なcapitalismの転換期が生んだcaseとなるように見えるが、
それは最早psychoanalysisのcaseではなく、
彼自身もまたgeneral practitionerになっている。

Fitzgeraldを読むのも久しぶりだけど、
単なる‘A Romance’とはとても言えない手の込んだbourgeois社会とcapitalismの考察。

やや懐しいPenguin Modern Classics版で読んだけど、
こういう分量の点でも内容の水準の点でも充実したIntroductionやNotesの付いた定食はやはり有り難いので、
いつでも手に入るようであってほしい。
疑問の余地のないmodern classicだけどそんなに読まれてない？

　狭き門　Andere Gide　の英訳版

英訳版は訳者によってタイトルが異なります。
　"Strait Is the Gate"　Dorothy Bussy 訳　紙の本のみ
　"The Narrow Gate"　Walter Ballenberger 訳　Kindle版のみ
さがせば他にもあるかもしれませんが、とりあえずこの二つを交互に読んでいった。
どちらかが誤訳していると思われるところや、一行飛ばして訳していたり、
引用されている詩が英訳してあったりなかったりで、どっちもどっちという感じ。
　イトコ同士のジェロームとアリサは愛し合っていたはずなのに、婚約を前にして
足踏みしてしまい、その後は愛し合っているにもかかわらず、なぜか関係が壊れてゆく。
　作品の中では彼らの親子関係について書いている部分はわずかしかありませんが、
これはまさに心理的な近親姦の症例そのものではないかと思います。そして、
これこそが作者ジッドの人生そのものだったのではないかと思うのです。
不幸で寂しい異性の親の心の空白を埋めるために自分の欲求をすべて犠牲にして
親をサポートするように育てられた子供たちの運命。
自己犠牲を強いられた彼らにとっては、自分が幸せになることは罪なのです。
　ジェロームがアリサの不幸な一面に出会ったとき、それは自分と母親の関係がアリサ
との関係の中で再現された瞬間であり、彼の人生を決定づけた瞬間でもあったのです。
そしてこれは作者ジッドがアリサのモデルとなったイトコの女性との関係を決定づけた
瞬間を描いたものでもあるのです。作者の実際の体験と重なる部分が多いために、
作品がリアルなものになっています。
　ジェロームとアリサはそれぞれの親との関係を引きずっているために、自分たち恋愛
に際して、さまざまな葛藤に直面することになります。ジェロームはこの葛藤を回避
するために知性に逃避し、高尚な文学に逃避します。アリサは最後には神への信仰に
逃避していきます。
　作品の最後は非常に印象的な場面で終わっています。私も一緒に泣いてしまいました。
そして変えることのできない自分の過去に思いを巡らせて、さらに泣き続けてしまいました。
　人生とはいったいなんなのでしょうか、、

高校の時に読んだ。
語り手が第三者か、あるいは登場人物の一人で過去を思い出しながら語るという形式
それって信頼できない 語り手というふうにいうんだよね
小説はもともとフランス語。フランスというと、カミュとかわけわからんもの
ばかりかと思うけど、パルムの僧院だって面白かったし、狭き門も好きだったし、
昔のはそうではないんだね

単純にフランス文学は邦訳か
フランス語で読めばいいのにと思う

フランス語ができなくて

「The Fox」 フレデリック・フォーサイス

神がかりなハッキング能力を持った自閉症の天才児に戦略的価値を見出した老スパイが、
ロシアやイラン、北朝鮮などを相手にハッキング攻撃を仕掛け、その背後にいるロシアの
スパイの頭目と対決する、という話。

家族にフォーサイス大好きな兄弟がいるので、どれひとつ読んでみようとつまんだもの。
兄弟に言わせればディテールがいい、リアリティがある、という話だったが、
各国の軍事・諜報組織や銃器・兵器についてウンチクが多いのは確かで、
それなりに時流をとらえたトピックを題材にしてもいる。
といっても、そういう Wikipedia 的な情報は別にして、物語としてみると、
ご都合主義なところがあまりに多い。
敵も味方も主人公の勝利のために動く将棋の駒のようで、あまり現実味は無いな。
俺ツエー系ライトノベルのようなものか？それはそれでいいんだけど。

主人公が理性の化け物みたいなリアリストで、それがクールと言えばクール。
何が楽しくてソレやってるの？と突っ込みたくなるが、誰もゴルゴ１３に
そんなことを言ったりしないよな。

文章は極めて平易でテンポもよく、初中級者向き。
イギリスのオッサンは、おそらく、皆こんなのを読んでストレスを解消している。
夢中になるほどエモいシーンもないので、通勤のお供にも最適。

おそらくこの作者としては、出来のいい方の作品ではないのだろう。
高い点は付ける気がしないが、同じ作者で別のを読んでみてもいいなとは思った。

それは英語の本を読まない人か、英語で本を読むのが好きでない人の言い分だよね

１つは英語で読むのが楽しいから英語で読むわけだし、逆に言えば日本語で読むのは
原著が日本語で書かれた本だけで十分、翻訳作品はすべて英語で読む、という考え方
だってあってもいい

また、同じヨーロッパ圏内の言語であれば語源を共有しているものも多いし、歴史、宗教、
文化を共有している部分も多いため、翻訳者の感覚や理解も、（明治になり欧米と交流を
始めたばかりの）日本人よりは、ずっと根の深いところでつながっている部分が多い

こうした事情は、漢字を共有している日本語の方が、中国の古典を英語に翻訳するよりも
細かいニュアンスを伝えやすいというのに似ている

さすがに（原著が英語で書かれた）英米文学だけしか読んじゃダメというのは範囲が狭すぎて窮屈
フランス、ドイツ、ロシア、イタリア、それにラテンアメリカの小説あたりまでは普通に読みたい

なら、邦訳で読めという人もいるけど、アルファベットと横書きで書かれた作品は、やっぱりアルファ
ベットと横書き（英訳）で読むほうがより自然だと思う

アガサクリスティの独訳本買って
読んでたわ
翻訳なので楽に読めた（もちろん辞書など引かずにな）
まあ元が簡単なのもあるけど

"I am Pilgrim" (by Terry Hayes)

ちょっと古いが、900頁を超える長編のスパイ・ミステリー小説を読んでみた。
物語はニューヨークの殺人事件で幕を開け、9/11、主人公の過去のスパイ活動、イスラムテロリストのバイオテロ計画、
トルコでの殺人事件、等々へ拡散していくが、最後はテロリストとの一騎打ちへと収斂していく。 長編にもかかわらず
全く飽きさせないストーリー展開と筆力は素晴らしく、一挙に読める。多少強引な部分もあるが、元々映画の脚本家・
プロデューサーだったこともあり、エンターテインメントとしての全体の構成と組立て方はさすが。
英語も比較的平易なので読みやすい。

意外と爽やかな読後感

ITは過去と現在に関わっていて、
登場人物たちが特殊な力によって過去の記憶の一部を奪われているために、
物語の時系列がすごく入り組んでるのも圧巻だった。

Dhalgrenなんかで主人公がたびたび記憶を失ったり、
優れた現代文学の特徴だね。

凝った表現でも基本的に基本的な単語しか使わないし
英語で読んでることを忘れるくらい没頭できる
経験上、フィクションのライター(mediocreレベル)は、二流の書評コラムニストのように内容のなさを複雑な語彙や表現で誤魔化す印象で、読む気がしなかったけど
一流は違うね
