物語の時系列がすごく入り組んでるのも圧巻だった。

Dhalgrenなんかで主人公がたびたび記憶を失ったり、
優れた現代文学の特徴だね。

基本的にフィクションはあまり読まないけど、この人の英語はネイティブの中学生でも読めるくらい簡単な英語で書かれていることに驚いた
凝った表現でも基本的に基本的な単語しか使わないし
英語で読んでることを忘れるくらい没頭できる
経験上、フィクションのライター(mediocreレベル)は、二流の書評コラムニストのように内容のなさを複雑な語彙や表現で誤魔化す印象で、読む気がしなかったけど
一流は違うね

The Outcast of Redwall by Brian Jacques

ずっと昔に借りパクしたまま放っていたジュブナイル小説を今頃読んだ。
Redwallシリーズという、それなりに有名らしい一連の作品の、外伝的な一冊。
本編は読んだこと無いが、一冊の中でそれなりに完結しているので、それほど気にならない。

小動物たちのファンタジー小説。勇者大河ドラマ。剣はそこそこ、魔法はほとんど無し。
怪力かつ激情家のアナグマSunflashが主人公で、
親友のハヤブサSkarlathを始めとする、ネズミやムササビ、モグラなどの仲間とともに、
イタチやキツネなど、ならず者の群れを率いるフェレットSixclawと対決する。

ストーリーは万事ヒネリ無く、子供向けと思えば素直な内容、王道といえば王道。
ドラマチックなセリフや、血なまぐさい戦闘も、小動物がやっていると思うと可愛い。
ファンタジー小説の定石？というか、変質的なこだわりのようなものがあって、この作家の場合は食べ物と、詩と、方言。
この方言がけっこう厄介で、ときどき何を言ってるんだか分からない。
どうせ大したことは言ってないので、あまり気にしないことにする。

強くて優しいSunflashはなかなか魅力的。
安直すぎる展開はどうかと思うが、英語圏では長く親しまれている作品らしい。
言葉の言い回しの妙がわかれば、もっと面白いのかも。

以前、たまたま入院した病院の図書室に置いてあったので暇にまかせて読んだことがある。
よく比べられるThe Lord of the Ringsのように、
現実と異なる物語世界を一から緻密に創造する代わりに、
秘密の入口のようなものを通って簡単に魔法学校に行けるあたりは
さすがに現代のお手軽な児童文学のようでもあるけど、
最後まで物語の展開に関わるちょっとした謎が仕込まれていて、
私はなるほど理由もなくあれほど読まれたわけでもないなと思った。

それから当然だけと口語表現が多いので、
学校の英語だけ勉強してきたような人にはちょうといいかな。
